Planning permission has been granted for a controversial asphalt plant in south Inishowen, it has emerged.
According to Donegal County Council, local planners formally gave the go ahead for the massive development at Barr’s Pit, Burnfoot, last Friday, subject to 12 conditions.
There were 130 objections lodged against the application by Moyle Plant Ltd to build the tar producing facility. The directors of the company are Anthony and Bridie Cassidy, Buncrana, according to documents lodged with the application.
Plans were lodged in February last year for the plant to be developed behind a large quarry at the foot of Scalp Mountain.
There was also huge local opposition to the development, including the setting up of a protest group – South Inishowen Against Asphalt Plant. A Facebook page for the group has almost 1,000 members.
Some residents in the area have serious health and safety concerns regarding the proposals.
However, the developers said there are currently no asphalt plants located in Inishowen, thus increasing the carbon footprint in tar or asphalt which is laid in Inishowen.
