A Sinn Fein Councillor in Inishowen has issued a strongly worded statement in support of today’s protest by mica affected homeowners.
Cllr Jack Murray spoke after upwards of 100 people gathered outside a Carn building site to block lorries delivering concrete products.
They were at the site on the Derry road where, it is claimed, the contractor is sourcing products from a company alleged to have been one of the main producers of mica affected blocks.
The protesters are also calling for Donegal County Council to boycott the same company.
“In recent days, we have once again seen the hurt, anger and heartbreak of people in Inishowen whose homes are crumbling after being constructed using defective blocks,” Cllr Murray said.

“These are good people. They are ordinary decent people who have been put in a devastating situation through no fault of their own.”
He added that, ‘understandably’, there was also frustration with Donegal County Council due to business the local authority was giving to companies who provided defective blocks.
“I share that frustration. As a member of Donegal County Council, it does not sit well with me that they (council) could be adding further hurt to so many people in Inishowen.
“As such, at tomorrow’s sitting of the Inishowen Municipal District, I will be joining the calls of my neighbours and friends by stating my belief that the council should not be doing business (either directly or indirectly) with anyone who has provided substandard building materials in Inishowen.”
Cllr Murray concluded that he will also ask that the council urgently contact the Minister for Housing to stress the ‘anger and hurt felt’ in the community.
