The Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, has promised another Covid-19 test centre for Donegal, it has emerged.
He made that, and other assurances, at a hastily arranged Zoom meeting this evening which was called by Deputy Joe McHugh in order to get more government assistance for the county.
Deputy McHugh called for the conference, which finished just before 8pm, following comments made yesterday evening by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan.
The CMO said there are clear examples of non-compliance across Donegal that “even the dogs on the street” know shouldn’t be happening.
Speaking to Donegal Dailyafter this evening’s meeting, Deputy McHugh described the meeting as ‘constructive and positive.’
“The meeting was very positive and constructive and Minister Donnelly acknowledged a lot of the good work that has been going on in the county,” he said.
“The Minister promised to look at getting an extra test centre in Donegal, possible in Milford due to the high numbers testing positive there. He also mentioned a pilot antigen testing in a local school, and I suggested one of the bigger schools in Letterkenny due to the recent outbreaks there.”
Deputy McHugh said there was some annoyance expressed at the comments made by the CMO yesterday.
“Everyone talked about the way the CMO’s message was delivered last night. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the vast majority of the people in Donegal who are complying with the guidelines. However, it was also agreed by all the Donegal politicians who took part in the meeting that the message had to get across to those who weren’t in compliance,” he said.
Deputy McHugh said Dr Holohan will speak to the local media in Donegal on Tuesday and tell the people of the county where we are at and what exactly needs to be done.
