CAR PARKING charges are set to be implemented at the world renowned Sliabh Liag.
This week, Councillors at the Donegal Municipal District monthly meeting passed new bylaws relating to the charges.
In December 2019, it was proposed that a new system of car parking fees for visitors be implemented and a period of public consultation followed.
Fifty-five submissions were lodged with Donegal County Council.
Many expressed worry about the possible deterioration of the access roads and fees that the parking charges would reduce the time spent by visitors to the local area.
There were many who also highlighted concerns over the possibility of tourists parking along the narrow roads instead of in the car parks.
Sliabh Liag, one of the wonders of the Wild Atlantic Way, attract 160,000 visitors each year. Among the tallest sea cliffs in Europe, the stunning cliffs drop 600 metres into Donegal Bay and offers spectacular scenery.
The charges are set to var from €2 to €5 per hour to between €10 and €15 per day. Annual passes will also be available to purchase.
Residents from the parishes of Glencolmcille and Kilcar will be able to access the car parks free of charge.
Sliabh Liag is currently serviced by three car parks with the new charges to cover two of those.
Locals have been assured by Donegal County Council officials that any income from the car parks will be redistributed into the area.
