LETTERKENNY University Hospital was ‘close to being closed down’ as it struggled to cope with a Covid-19 surge earlier this year, it has been claimed.
New figures show how Letterkenny University Hospital had one of the worst rates of patients contracting Covid-19 in recent months.
In January, 91 patients at LUH contracted the coronavirus.
On January 10, extra staff had to be called in when the facility struggled to cope with the volume of people presenting.
Seven ambulances queued outside with the hospital described that evening as ‘becoming overwhelmed’.
Some patients were assessed and treated in the ambulances.
University Hospital Galway had a worse rate with 115 patients contracting Covid-19 in January.
Today’s Sunday Independent quote a senior health source as saying that both hospitals were ‘close to being closed down’.
The source told the newspaper that Covid ‘raged out of control’ in the hospitals.
