The Letterkenny Institute of Technology has applied for planning permission to use its car park to locate solar panels to power its campus.
An ambitious planning application has just been lodged with Donegal County Council to erect 50 large photovoltaic panels in the car park opposite the campus at Port Road.
The solar panels will be located on the 10-acre car park which is used mainly as an overspill car park for students during the busiest times of the college terms.
The application also includes a two-metre fence enclosure, two car charging stations and a consumer shelter to the rear of the car park.
Other associated works and further works at the main LYIT campus building have also been applied for.
The application is not yet lodged with the council and so cannot be viewed by the public at this stage.
The ambitious plan is seen as a major step forward for the college which is likely to grow in size and be granted university status in the near future.
When up and running, the erection of solar panels will supply at least part of the daily electrical needs of the campus.
