AN BORD Pleanála have ruled that the proposed development of a crematorium near Manorcunningham would have been ‘a haphazard and piecemeal development’.
The planning authority rejected an appeal against a decision by Donegal County Council to turn down planning permission for the proposed development.
“It is considered that the proposed change of use from a commercial development to a crematorium and funeral home would constitute a haphazard and piecemeal development on lands more suitable for agricultural commercial development,” An Bord Pleanála said.
“It is considered that the surrounding land uses are generally unsuitable and unsympathetic for the use of the subject site as a crematorium and funeral home.
“The proposed development would, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.”
The planning authority added that the building ‘is of a size, scale and design which is generally unsuitable and unsympathetic to accommodate a crematorium and funeral home’.
Further, ABP raised concerns of the impact on local residents by way of excessive noise and air pollution.
Lawrence Donnelly and Sane Stewart had proposed to turn the old Sallybrook Creamery, on a 0.83 hectare site at Monclink, Manorcunningham into a complex housing a crematorium, a funeral home, ancillary accommodation, memorial garden, parking, elevation treatment, connection to an existing septic tank and all associated site works.
In September, Donegal County Council refused the proposal after over 40 submissions from local residents or legal representatives on their behalf were made.
