MARK English has been confirmed as part of a 24-strong Irish team for the 2021 European Indoor Athletics Championships.
The Finn Valley ace broke his own Irish indoor 800m record at the weekend,
English, a three-time European medalist, goes to Toruń on the back of a record-breaking showing on Saturday, when he pipped rising Irish teenager Cian McPhillips on the line in the 800m at the Irish Life Health Elite Micro Meet.
English’s impressive 1:46.10 sends him nicely to Poland, where he will be joined by several of Ireland’s top performers from the 2019 edition.
English and Ciara Mageean were medallists in Glasgow while Phil Healy was a semi-finalist.
English won silver at the 2015 European Indoors in Prague and was the 800m bronze medalist at the 2019 edition.
Athletics Ireland High Performance Director Paul McNamara said: “It has been a remarkable indoor season so far in 2021, for many reasons, and this is reflected in both the size and quality of the team travelling to Poland.
“Despite higher qualification standards and fewer opportunities to compete, Irish athletes nailed their opportunity when it presented itself, most notably this past weekend at the Irish Life Health Elite Micro-Meet, and we now have an unprecedented 24 athletes who have earned selection for the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships, with many more who have posted qualification standards missing out due to the three-athlete-per-event limit”.
