The Joe Bonnar road project in Letterkenny is due to be completed ‘shortly’ when restrictions are lifted, Donegal County Council has confirmed.
The road will link the Neil T. Blaney Road (R250) and the Port Road (R229).
The road project, first announced in 2016, was due to be completed by Christmas 2019. Works wre delayed after significant issues emerged with sewer pipes. Approx 240 m of sewer were replaced by Irish Water before the project resumed.
The Letterkenny-Milford MD Roads Department has this week confirmed that the Joe Bonner road is approximately 90% complete. Remaining works entailing the completion of the carriageway surface is scheduled for completion when lockdown is lifted.
The Joe Bonner road has been designed and constructed to support sustainable mobility initiatives by improving pedestrian and cycle access in the Letterkenny town.
The Road also facilitates a new entrance to the Letterkenny Public Services Centre and future developments on the adjacent site, including the proposed Social Enterprise Centre.
Cllrs Donal Coyle, Gerry McMonagle and Michael McBride all sought an update on the project this week. They were told that the road will be opened to the public pending approval by a Safety Audit.
“As soon as all necessary approvals have been received we will programme the opening of the road,” a spokesperson said.
