The allocation of €450,000 by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for a walkway/cycleway from Dunnes of Illistrin to the Mountain Top Roundabout in Letterkenny has been welcomed by local councillor, Ciaran Brogan.
“The Donegal National Road Design Office have been working on this project over the last year, preparing and completing the design of the route,” Cllr Brogan said.
“The allocation of €450,000 by TII will now allow this project to go to tender. Hopefully, construction will begin in the second quarter of this year,” he added.
This project will connect the Mountain Top to Illistrin.
And with the link from Illistrin to the Bluebanks/Kilmacrennan already a popular route for walkers, runners and cyclists, this new stretch will bring the total distance of walkway/cycle from the Hospital Roundabout to Kilmacrennan along the N56 to 10K.
Councillor Brogan added “If Covid has taught us anything, it has highlighted the importance of recreation and regular exercise. I hope that this 10K of walkway/cycleway will eventually extend from Letterkenny to Termon, so that in time, people wishing to walk, run or cycle from Letterkenny to Glenveagh National Park can do safely,” Cllr Brogan said.
