The Chief Medical Officer has warned that Ireland will see a high number of daily deaths from Covid-19 in the coming days.
Dr Tony Holohan said that “for the next period of time” we will see a high number of deaths from the virus in Ireland.
He was speaking as the deaths were announced yesterday of 46 people with the disease.
This was the greatest number of daily deaths as a result of the virus in nine months with all but two of the deaths occurred this month.
There was some small glimmer of hope with a total of 3,086 confirmed cases were reported yesterday, the lowest daily figure since New Year’s Day.
Dr Holohan added that the rise in deaths was connected to the “unsustainably” high levels of infection and he called on people once again to stay home “out of respect for those who have lost their lives” or were in hospital.
