The people of Moville didn’t allow Covid to ruin their Christmas.
The Inishowen town’s Christmas Tree Committee had toyed with the idea of not putting up a tree this year.
The organisers decided it wouldn’t be fair to ask local businesses to raise the cash for the tree and lights so they went online instead.
And much to their delight the committee raised more than €6,000 needed to light up the beautiful town.
A spokesperson explained “The Moville Christmas tree committee would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated and helped to once again light up the town in such a difficult year.
“We briefly toiled with the idea of cancelling the lights like everything else this year but after a few minutes, we knew we had to go ahead as normal.
“Funding it was going to be our problem as we couldn’t call on the businesses after the year they had and couldn’t distribute envelopes door to door either so that only left us the online funding route.
“We decided to plough on and put our trust in the community and they didn’t let us down with over €5000 donated online along with €1,100 raised in May by Oran Mc Gonagle in Boston from an online town clock reunion.
“So we source a tree over the phone as we weren’t allowed to go and choose one with the lockdown, bought new lights, hired the machines, delivered Santa gifts to the Schools and creches and switched on virtually on Facebook.
“So a big thank you to everyone who worked and helped in any way to keep Moville looking festive again this year and we look forward to a more normal light up next year.”
