Extra Garda patrols are to be drafted into Letterkenny to cope with Covid regulations in the run-up to Christmas.
As more and more shops open, there is already a noticeable increase in footfall around Donegal’s largest town.
The Chamber of Commerce has held a meeting with An Garda Síochána, whose presence will now be more visible on the town’s retail thoroughfares.
As well as routine mobile patrols, there will be additional foot patrols as well as Gardai on bicycles.
As well as watching that people comply with Covid guidelines, Gardai will patrol traffic which is expected to be extremely busy in the days before December 25th.
The President of Letterkenny Chamber, Jimmy Stafford, welcomed the move.
He said: “They will have noticeable, visible patrols on foot, on motorbikes and bicycles around the town, just to make sure that people are operating in a safe manner. That will give another air of confidence.”
