MICKEY McCann hailed his Donegal hurlers after a heroic comeback to win the Nicky Rackard Cup this afternoon.
Donegal came back from eight behind to defeat Mayo 3-18 to 0-21 at Croke Park.
“I feel that we deserved the victory,” McCann told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub after the win.
“We were the better team after the first quarter. We have quality players and they stepped up. This is the sweetest because we haven’t beaten Mayo since 2004 and Mayo have played in the Christy Ring. It’s all about progressing and raising the standard.”
Late goals from Davin Flynn and Richie sealed Donegal’s third Rackard Cup win – a triumph that seemed unlikely midway through the first half.
At the water break, Donegal found themselves 0-11 to 0-3 behind, but Donegal were able to rally and Joe Boyle’s goal late in the first half proved key.
McCann said: ”We were very worried. Mayo looked very dangerous up front. It was a worrying time but it was good to get the water break to get us settled. We settled down into the game and we knew we could hurt them.
“After the first quarter, the team performed really well for us.”
