The calendar year of 2020 has brought with it a sizeable degree of uncertainty and unfulfilled promise over the last few months.
Feelings of loneliness and isolation have become widespread and even charitable organisations are at a loss as to how to tackle such troubling issues.
Amid that period of time, the future for a large number of businesses has been cast into doubt.
Yet there is light at the end of the tunnel. St Vincent de Paul in Letterkenny has adopted a novel idea that aims to help the public and the town’s business outlets alike.
In conjunction with the Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce, SVP will be distributing ShopLK vouchers to those who need them the most, but they need your help.
Rosa Glacken, North Western Regional President of SVP said, “We at SVP are experiencing unprecedented times. We are appealing to both the general & business community to help support us as we launch this initiative to help local families, while helping local business.
“We understand that many will find themselves in very different circumstances this year & we want to let you know; we are here to help. You can contact us on 074-9129503.”
Jimmy Stafford, Lettterkenny Chamber of Commerce President said Letterkenny Chamber, through our ShopLK brand, is delighted to be supporting Donegal SVP.
He added “The work that this charity undertakes for many families throughout the year is so important in our community, so we are glad to be able to support this. 2020 has been a tough year for everyone and many will need the help of SVP more than ever.
“We hope that this unique, local collaboration will encourage even more people to donate to this cause in the knowledge that the cards are also supporting local businesses and local jobs.”
Cormac McCormack, Letterkenny Area President of SVP spoke of the wonderful work the staff & volunteers at Vincent’s charity shop have been doing behind closed doors with their ‘Click & Collect’.
However, the closure of the shop for an extended period & Masses having to take place behind closed doors has had a significant impact on donations.
He said “We are experiencing approx. 30% increase in requests for help this year already. It is a worrying time for so many. The COVID crisis has affected so many aspects of our work including, for this year at least, we find ourselves in a position that we are unable to accept donations of food & toys as the safety of our members & clients is of utmost importance.
“With that in mind, we are delighted to partner with Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce to, hopefully, raise much-needed funds to meet the demands of families in our community that need help this Christmas. We appreciate the wonderful support that we have enjoyed from both the public & business communities over the years.”
You can donate at svp.ie/shoplk, contact Lorraine 085 737 2111 if you would like to do a fundraiser or make a donation or speak to any member of the society if you wish to support this initiative.
