A Donegal school community has expressed their shock and sadness over the tragic passing of past-pupil Conchúr Doherty.
Conchúr (aged 20) passed away last week after entering the River Foyle. His body was recovered on Sunday following an extensive search and public appeal.
Mr Doherty, a fluent Irish speaker, had attended Coláiste Chineál Eoghain in Buncrana due to his family’s passion for the language.
The young Derry man attended primary school in Gaelscoil na Daróige and then travelled from Derry every day for his post-primary education in Buncrana.
“We were privileged and fortunate to have Conchúr as a pupil,” said a spokesperson for Coláiste Chineál Eoghain.
“We fondly remember Conchúr as a kind, gentle, friendly and polite pupil who will always stay in our memories and in our hearts.
“He loved and had a talent for art and music, singing and playing guitar.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Conchúr’s dear parents, Linda and Gleann on the loss of their dearly beloved son, to Caitilín, Ruairí and Ciarraí on the loss of their beloved brother and to all his relatives and family friends.
“We pray his family will find solace and strength to carry this immeasurable loss and grief. Suaimhneas síoraí do Chonchúr.”
Another tribute from Gaelscoil Na Daróige recalled the best attributes of Conchúr, who was one of their founding pupils: “Conchúr was an extremely pleasant pupil with an infectious sense of humour and he demonstrated the ethos of the school every day by speaking Gaeilge fluently and with pride. We will remain forever proud and grateful of having such a great pupil.”
Mr Doherty’s funeral will take place on Wednesday 18th of November at St. Columba’s Church Longtower, Derry. Due to government guidelines the wake and funeral will be private for immediate family only.
