Live shotgun cartridges have been discovered during an illegal dumping clean-up at a popular walking trail.

The alarming incident was reported this morning at the Muckish Railway Walk, which lies between Creeslough and Falcarragh.

A local rubbish collector was cleaning up dumped goods when they came across the live ammunition cartridges.

Cllr John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh took to social media to express his shock over the potential dangers the cartridges could have caused.

He said that whoever dumped them would know that the cartridges could inflict serious harm to anyone picking them up, or children that use this walkway.

The discovery has been reported to Gardaí.

“I commend the local committee on their work keeping this area litter free,” Cllr Ó Fearraigh said.
