A leading Bishop has said there appears to be no scientific evidence to support why Catholic Churches are still closed.
Bishop of Raphoe, Alan McGuckian S.J., said churches in Co Donegal need to be reopened so people can attend Mass again.
He said this needs to be done as soon as is possible while ensuring all Covid-19 protocols are in place.
Bishop McGuckian said “In the Diocese our priests and people have been working hard to ensure this has been done, so people are safe when they attend Church.
“There appears to be no scientific evidence to support the closure of our Churches as sources of community transmission of Covid-19.
“I call on our government and legislators to allow our people to attend church for Mass.”
The Letterkenny-based Bishop said people are struggling the longer that churches remain closed.
He added “Many people are struggling and are finding this a hard and painful lockdown.
“Our Churches and places of worship are an essential support and necessity for our people mentally and spiritually in these difficult times.
“When our people are permitted to attend mass, they have the freedom to choose to attend.
“Many may feel vulnerable and uneasy about coming into a place of worship and they can join and pray online if they wish.”
Bishop McGuckian also reached out to business owners saying he hoped they too can open up safely before Christmas.
He said “I am also very concerned for many local business owners in our county that are really struggling to survive.
“I hope there can be some practical steps taken that will allow them to open safely for the public especially coming up to Christmas when they depend on our support to keep going.”
