A fundraiser to upgrade the playground at Little Angels Special School is quickly gathering pace this week.
The Letterkenny school welcomes pupils with special needs from all over Donegal. However, the current pandemic has changed the way they use their playground and some equipment is in need of replacing.
Local mother Kate Meehan wanted to help out. She came up with a novel idea to fund the essential repairs and replacements by doing a sponsored 5K walk every day in November.
Kate’s determination inspired a movement, and Little Angels Principal Ailbhe Dunne has joined in with a pledge to walk to school every day.
Kate and Ailbhe are now clocking up the kilometres, rain or shine, and are being supported every step of the way by the school community.
Kate, whose son Ronan attends Little Angels, explained her motivations for fundraising and said Little Angels is a “fantastic school, where the Principal, Teachers, S.N.A.s, Bus drivers, Escorts, other staff members all go above and beyond their professionalism in teaching and helping all the special kids in a loving and caring way to reach and achieve their goals to the best of their abilities. The transition alone in our wee man has just been phenomenal.”
Kate and Ailbhe have challenged friends to join the challenge too. Families are invited to walk, run or cycle this month to support the cause.
Ailbhe said: “We would love if others joined us on this journey walking, running or cycling during the month of November to beat the covid blues and the dreaded covid bloat!”
