THE Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) has called for a safety audit of schools in Donegal.
The TUI have spoken out as three counties – Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan – will be moved to Level 4 of the Covid-19 restrictions.
TUI President Martin Marjoram said the risk posed by Covid-19 is a daily source of stress for members.
“Many school buildings were barely fit for purpose before ever the challenge of Covid-19 arose,” he said.
“Ventilation and heating problems will now become critical as we move towards colder weather.
“Many schools, particularly those based in older buildings, will require new ventilation solutions and monitors to signify when air exchange is required. The required resourcing must be provided.”
The Government has stated regularly its intention to keep schools open as a ‘key priority’.
Mr Majoram has sought clarity from the Government as other units of society are being closed.
He said: “We will insist on consistency, clarity and certainty for our members. We have stated at all times that we will be guided by the public health advice, but a detailed rationale based on the most up-to-date evidence is a necessity.”
