THE competition last weekend at Buncrana Golf Club was the Brennans Pharmacy Open Stableford and the weather conditions over the weekend were very difficult for golf.
However, the big hitting Matthew Diggins – who only acquired his handicap recently – made the best of the conditions on Sunday morning to shoot 41 points.
The distance Matthew can hit off the tee made the difference as Matthew shot 20 points over the front 9 and added another 21 points over the back 9 to amass his winning score of 41 points.
The full results of the Brennans Pharmacy Open Stableford are as follows; 1st Matthew Diggin (22) 41 points, 2nd Benny Murphy (5) 39 points b.o.t. Gross Oliver Doherty (2) 69 gross, 3rd Liam Lynch Jnr (17) 39 points, Best Day (Sat) Shane Dillon (9) 38 points, Visitor Mark O’ Connell (19) 33 points and Back 9 Liam Henderson (21) 21 points b.o.t. Donegal League
Buncrana Golf Club’s Donegal League Team are Final bound after a fantastic victory in Sunday’s Semi final against local rivals the North West.
Played in atrocious conditions yesterday the Wee Links powered to a superb victory. It was a tough away match, with three matches played in the North West and 2 matches at home.
This did not deter Fiachra O’Flaherty’s men. Under the guidance of Vice Captain Oliver Doherty the team powered home with superb victories in the 2 home ties, from Ferdia O’Flaherty and Ciaran McAteer who won 6 and 5 and Francis McGrory and Cormac Doherty who won 4 and 3.
This was followed up by some magnificent away performances from Buncrana players. Luke Bradley & Christopher McCallion led home the victory celebrations with a superb away win, winning 2 and 1 to clinch the tie, but there was no let up from the Buncrana men with the teams coming behind all on top form, with Brian Bradley and Paul McDaid all but assured of victory, being 3 holes up with 4 to play and Team Captain, Fiachra O’Flaherty and Caolan McLaughlin who were all Square with 3 holes left.
It was a magnificent all round performance and a well deserved Big Derby Victory.
