GARDAÍ have urged vigilance after what is described as ‘a substantial amount of cash’ was taken from a man in Lifford by two cold callers, purporting to be genuine tradesmen.

The two men called to the man’s home at Rossgier between 2-3pm on Thursday last, September 3.

There was genuine work being carried out in the area on the roads at the same time and the two males in question gave the impression that they were involved with these works.

They took substantial cash from the man in exchange for work.

“They did a very small amount of work on the driveway that could only be described as substandard,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the Rossgier area that day, September 3rd between 2pm and 3pm and who witnessed these men in the area or their mode of transport or anyone who was in the area who had a dashcam and who may have captured these men on it to contact Gardaí in Letterkenny on 074-9167100 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111.”

An Garda Síochána have issued some advice in relation to such calls.

A spokesperson said: “Please advise elderly/vulnerable neighbours, family members or friends against answering the door to bogus callers.

“These callers may call to the door offering a service such as power washing, painting, garden maintenance or other services.

“Anyone who lives alone should fit a chain lock to their door and only open the door to people who are known to them. Always contact Gardaí if you have a suspicion in relation to a caller in your area and provide as much detail as possible eg. registration number of car, direction of travel and description of caller.”
