THE Irish Government is set to put the names of Mairead McGuinness and Andrew McDowell forward as nominees to be Ireland’s next European Commissioner.
An incorporeal Cabinet meeting this afternoon is deicussing the issue of the vacancy which arose following the resignation of Phil Hogan.
McGuinness is the European Parliament Vice-President and a veteran MEP while McDowell is an ex-vice president of the European Investment Bank.
Their names are to go to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for consideration.
Co Louth native McGuinness, a former journalist at RTÉ, is a Fine Gael MEP for the Midlands-North West constituency and is in her fourth term as an MEP having been first elected in 2004.
Mr McDowell is former chief economic advisor to the government from 2011 to 2016 working closely with then taoiseach Enda Kenny.
