Letterkenny residents are being invited to have their say on a new cultural district project which is being developed in the town centre.
Rathmullan-based architects Pasparakis Friel Architects are working on a proposed new cultural district to improve connections between The Donegal County Museum, An Grianan Theatre and The Regional Cultural Centre.
The LKCD project is part of the Irish Architecture Foundation’s Reimagine… project to enhance the local built environment of six towns across Ireland.
Pasparakis Friel will be hosting a public consultation in An Grianán Theatre Forecourt as part of Culture Night on from 6pm to 9pm Friday, 18th September. The public consultation will proceed in line with public health guidance related to Covid-19.
Commenting on the public consultation, Ronan Friel of Pasparakis Friel said: “We would like to hear from locals as to how this project could be a catalyst for the growth of culture and arts in the region whilst also improving Letterkenny’s public realm. Engaging local communities with their shared spaces is a key priority for the Irish Architecture Foundation’s Reimagine… project, and we want to ensure local people are at the centre of our project. We’re inviting locals to drop by anytime between 6pm and 9pm to hear more about the project and to share your ideas for a new Cultural District for Letterkenny.”
Also commenting was Nathalie Weadick, Director of the IAF, who said: “We are delighted to see this new wayfinding installation by Pasparakis Friel, who have been working closely with An Grianan, RCC and the Donegal Museum who initiated this project to create a connection between three fantastic cultural institutions. Now, more than ever, this Cultural Corridor, highlights the value in how we design and use our public realm. In the future, we hope to see this Cultural Corridor flourish as space for new creative opportunities for the people of Letterkenny.”
The ‘Reimagine…’ project is supported by the Creative Ireland Programme’s National Creativity Fund.
Speaking about the project, Tania Banotti, Director of the Creative Ireland Programme, said: “The Creative Ireland Programme is a national programme with lots of local activity led by Eileen Burgess the coordinator for Donegal County Council. We’re supporting ‘Reimagine’ in Letterkenny because we believe that communities, working with great architects, can come up with brilliant solutions to improve their towns. We look forward to seeing the reaction of the people of Letterkenny to the project at this stage.”
