The Irish language plan for Letterkenny has been approved, which means that the town is now recognised as a Gaeltacht service town.
Up to €80,000 per year will be allocated to the implementation of the plan, which will be used to employ a Language Planning Officer.
The Green Party in Donegal has welcomed the announcement from Minister Catherine Martin.
Donegal Green Party Chairman Michael White said “This is great news for Letterkenny and a tribute to the work done by Líonra Leitir Ceannain. The Green Party believes that we have to be more ambitious in our approach to the language.
“Conserving and promoting the language is a key element of our policy here in Donegal. I’d like to thank Minister Catherine Martin for prioritizing language development in the county.”
Minister Martin said “We would like to congratulate the organisation, Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, and the town’s community in general for all they have done to complete this plan.
“We would also like to congratulate Foras na Gaeilge which supported the lead organisation while the plan was being prepared. The approval of this plan means that a language plan will be implemented in a Gaeltacht service town for the very first time.”
