IRISH Water says that it has completed works intended to improve the quality of drinking water in Ballintra.
The works, in conjunction with Donegal County Council, were also to improve the water supply and to reduce water leaks in the area.
“Irish Water is committed to safeguarding the water supply for customers in Ballintra,” said Irish Water’s Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead Declan Cawley.
“The works were temporarily stopped in response to the COVID-19 crisis, but we were able to resume works and complete the project early in August.”
The water mains replacement works involved the decommissioning and replacement of approximately 300 metres of problematic cast iron water mains with modern, high density polyethylene pipes.
The works were undertaken along Main Street by Farran’s Construction Limited on behalf of Irish Water.
Cawley said: ‘‘There was a history of leaks in Ballintra, as well as bursts and outages.
“We also took this opportunity to lay new water service connections from the public water main to customers’ property boundaries and connect them to the customer’s water supply.
‘’The works did involve some short-term water shut offs and traffic management measures which we understand causes inconvenience. However, we would like to take this opportunity to thank customers and businesses for their patience while we completed these essential works.’’
