Locals in the vicinity of one of Donegal and Ireland’s most famous beaches say traffic is “murder” lately.
And residents near Murder Hole Beach at Melmore near Downings are demanding that Donegal County Council address the issues.
They say that last weekend was simply chaotic in the area with traffics jams and tailbacks to and from the beach.
They say that as well as visitors queuing for hours, locals were “prisoners in their own homes.”
The popularity of Murder Hole Beach now sees it rank as #6 on TripAdvisor’s list of top things to do in Donegal.
One local resident has appealed to the council to put a plan in place for the area as the popularity of the beach increases.
He said “This August bank holiday saw the escalating traffic problem become utterly chaotic with abandoned cars and road blockages. This has highlighted the need for immediate action as regards access to Melmore.
“For the sake of tourism, the local community and local businesses a wider and safer road must be put top of Donegal County Councils agenda.
This road is only designed for light volumes of traffic but as you can see from the pictures and video, there is much more than the road can handle.
The owners of businesses and the people living there are often trapped in their homes as people abandon their cars on the side of the road with no care for anyone else.
“We wish to highlight this and ask that Donegal County council make improvements in both widening the road that accommodate the extra volume of traffic and where necessary have the road resurfaced.”
