Gardaí have not yet identified any suspects following the destruction of trees outside Carndonagh on Saturday night.

The community was left reeling when they discovered that up to 20 trees and some flowerbeds on the Newpark Road were torn apart by vandals overnight.

This is not the first time that the trees have been forcefully snapped either – as similar incidents have occurred at the entrance corridor to the Carndonagh in recent years.

The trees were replanted and maintained by the community who have been working hard on Tidy Towns efforts this summer.

However, on Sunday morning they were shocked to see their work ruined as the trees were chopped down again.

“It exhibits a total lack of respect for their community in general,” said Garda spokesperson Grainne Doherty.

Gardaí are anxious to speak to anyone who was involved in the vandalism and are appealing for information in the investigation. The public is being asked to contact Gardai in Buncrana on +353 74 9320540 with any information.
