THE Donegal schoolboy who penned a letter to the Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp asking him to stop winning matches has said the Reds deserved to win the Premier League.
Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions last night as Manchester City, their closest challengers, lost 2-1 to Chelsea. Following Liverpool’s 4-0 rout of Crystal Palace the previous night, City had to win to keep the albeit inevitable title race alive.
In February, Glenswilly schoolboy and Manchester United fanatic Daragh Curley, as part of a school project, wrote to Klopp.
He wrote “Liverpool are winning too many games…So the next time Liverpool play please make them lose. You should just let the other team score. I hope I have convinced you to not win the league or any other match again.”
The 10-year-old was stunned when he received a return letter from the German.
“Unfortunately, on this occasion, I cannot grant your request, not through choice anyway,” the Liverpool manager wrote.
“As much as you want Liverpool to lose it is my job to do everything that I can to help Liverpool to win as there are millions of people around the world who want that to happen so I really do not want to let them down.
“Luckily for you, we have lost games in the past and we will lose games in the future because that is football.”
Daragh shot to fame after Donegal Daily carried the story and he even appeared on the Late Late Show alongside former Manchester United captain Roy Keane.
Liverpool lost four games soon after Daragh’s letter, but as football saw a the behind-closed-doors resumption after the coronavirus pandemic shutdown the Reds won a first League title in 30 years – their first of the Premier League era.
This morning on Newstalk Breakfast, Daragh admitted that he was ‘not very happy’, but said: “In fairness they deserved it because they were by far the best team in the Premier League.”
