The planned stroke unit for Letterkenny University Hospital is now scheduled to open in September.
The unit was due to open earlier but was delayed due to the Covid crisis.
Members of the Regional Health Forum West were told the unit is currently being assessed and staff numbers have been agreed.
Nursing staff have already been appointed and therapy support staff recruitment is now underway for the unit.
The unit will be opened in September – subject to no further wave of Covid-19 patients presenting at the hospital.
The details were closed following a question by Councillor Albert Doherty about staff numbers and the timescale for the project.
The opening of the unit comes after a major local campaign spearheaded by hospital consultant Professor Ken Mulpeter.
Professor Mulpeter threatened to resign from his position at the hospital unless a unit was set up for victims of stroke within the county.
He organised a protest march on the hospital to voice his concerns and the rally was attended by hundreds of people.
