A Donegal student is part of a dynamic team of DCU students developing and promoting new software for children and adults with Dyslexia.
Aileen Moore from Dunfanaghy is playing a lead role in the communications aspect of the student startup Dyslex.ie. The free software aids people with Dyslexia in increasing their reading time online and it is proving beneficial for parents as they help children with homework.
Aileen, aged 19, is in her second year of a Communications degree and focusing on designing images and writing for the Dyslex.ie website.

Reading with Dyslexia can be difficult, and with the recent increase in online learning and remote working , the importance of being able to confidently read online is paramount. Kevin Cogan, a second year DCU student has developed ‘Dyslex.ie’, a dyslexia friendly software that aims to increase your reading speed and reduce the number of errors made while reading online. Dyslex.ie has won awards such as Citibank’s pathways to progress program and was a leading project in Enactus DCU which placed 1st at this year’s Enactus National Competition.

Dyslex.ie is a student start up company run by a team of students from Dublin City University, who are passionate about reducing the stigma around Dyslexia, and spreading awareness of its common symptoms that often go undiagnosed. Through frequent posting on their social media, Dyslex.ie raises awareness, by posting facts about this common learning disability, debunking old stereotypes and educating on the reality of dyslexia.

Let’s start with the fact that everybody’s dyslexia can be slightly different, so there isn’t a “one size fits all” when it comes to a dyslexia friendly software. This is why Dyslex.ie gives you the opportunity to fully customise your reading experience. Dyslex.ie has an initial survey which tailors the software to your type of dyslexia, prioritizing the features you need to read. Useful for all ages, Dyslex.ie includes many easy-to-use features such as changing the size and colour of the page you’re reading, the amount of words on a line, the background colour, and it even highlights the line you’re reading so you don’t lose track of where you are.
