Staff at Letterkenny University Hospital have been treated to over 450 gift vouchers thanks to a local fundraiser set up during Covid-19.
The ‘Treat for Nurses’ fund was established in March by Letterkenny schoolteacher Linda Sweeney as a thank you to frontline staff as they face the challenges of the pandemic.
Every donation to the fund was used to buy €20 vouchers for nurses and all hospital service staff. Vouchers were bought from local businesses as a way of supporting the local economy in uncertain times.
Linda’s project was met with such generosity from the community that over €10,580 was raised from almost 100 supporters. Vouchers were also kindly donated by businesses, many of which had to close their doors during the crisis.
Vouchers have been sent to Letterkenny University Hospital in bundles of 150 at a time and raffled among staff in different wards.
As the fund comes to a close, the last bundle will be gifted to staff this week.
Linda said: “I would like to thank everyone who donated so generously to the fund, especially while many people weren’t working themselves. It just shows the appreciation that everyone has for the work being carried out by frontline staff.
“Thank you to all the businesses that donated despite the fact they were closed themselves. It was lovely to be able to buy vouchers from local businesses with all the donations.
“I’d also like to thank Garrys Office Supplies for sponsoring the envelopes and Darren from Browne Printers for sponsoring all the labels.”
