A HOST of personalities, including the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, sent special video messages to the sixth class pupils of St Mura’s NS, Tooban.
The school shut down in March and the sixth class pupils will now go to secondary school having been unable to complete their days in primary school due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
President Higgins said: “As President of Ireland, I have been very impressed by the way in which you have all responded, risen to the challenge and continue to learn at home.
“You have found all sorts of imaginative ways to remain in touch with your friends and to pursue your hobbies.”
Mr Varadkar said: “This pandemic is historic and it is very difficult for everyone. I am sorry you weren’t able to finish sixth class, but hopefully, as the country gives back to normal, you will be able to see some of them over the summer.”
Minister for Education Joe McHugh and Minister for Health Simon Harris were among the others to take part.
Former St Mura’s pupil Georgie Kelly – now a top footballer with Dundalk FC – led the messages from the world of sport, which included Donegal GAA stars Shaun Patton and Katy Herron, Finn Harps ace Raffaele Cretaro, Irish athlete Ciara Mageean and legendary Kilkenny hurling manager Brian Cody.
Donegal crooner Daniel O’Donnell and TV presenters Dermot Bannon, Evanne Ní Chuilinn Gavan Reilly and Ciara Doherty contributed.
Westlife star Shane Filan also delivered a personal message to Tooban’s departing scholars.
