A man was arrested in Co Donegal yesterday afternoon in connection with a shooting.
The shooting happened at the University of Limerick in 2015.
Two masked gunmen shot a man, in his 50s, seriously injuring him as he parked his car at University of Limerick shortly after 6.30am on June 29, 2015.
Christy Keane, 59, was shot a number of times in the car park at the University of Limerick Sports arena as he attempted to go to the arena for an early morning gym session.
He managed to escape to the nearby running track where he collapsed.
He is the brother of Kieran Keane who was shot dead in 2003 at the height of a destructive and bitter feud between rival Limerick gangs, which ultimately claimed 18 lives.
Christy Keane had served a 10-year prison term for drugs offences after being arrested near his home in St Mary’ Park in Limerick while trying to move €250,000 worth of cannabis.
And yesterday, nearly five years after the incident, a suspect, in his 40s, was arrested in Co Donegal after a garda operation.
A second suspect, in his 30s, was also arrested in Limerick city on the same day.
They are to appear before a sitting at the Criminal Courts of Justice at 3pm on Wednesday.
A spokesman said: “Gardaí have arrested two men in relation to a shooting incident in Co. Limerick June 29, 2015.
“At approximately 6.35am a man (50s) was shot by two masked men as he parked his car in the grounds of the University of Limerick.
“On June 2, 2020 Gardaí from the Henry Street District, with the assistance of local Gardaí and the Armed Support Unit from Limerick and the North Western Region, carried out an arrest operation in Donegal and arrested a man (40s).
