A county councillor has demanded better emergency services including a fire engine and an emergency rib boat for Tory Island after a young man suffered a serious accident this week.
The man, who was in his 20s, fell almost 30 feet from cliffs while out walking on Wednesday last.
He was rescued following a major operation and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where he suffered a broken hip and other broken bones.
Thankfully he has since been released from hospital.
Now local county councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig, a long-time campaigner on behalf of the island, says the population of almost 150 deserve better.
“Islanders on Tory have been virtually ignored by successive Governments and they deserve better.
“This week’s near-tragedy was an example of how poorly equipped islanders are when something like this happens.
“The fact that they do not have a fire engine or a rib to evacuate someone from the island with speed speaks volumes for the way they are being treated and have been treated over the years.
“It was a miracle that this young man was rescued and he was lucky that the emergency services and the islanders got to him in time because I’m told he would have drowned.
“Equipment like a fire engine and an emergency sea vessel are not luxuries, they are essential equipment for islanders,” he said.
