THERE have been 16 further deaths from Covid-19 confirmed in the Republic of Ireland.
The 16 deaths bring to 1,561 Ireland’s death toll since the outbreak began.
Health officials have been notified of another 51 new cases of the coronavirus. This is the lowest daily total of new cases since March 15.
There have now been 24,251 cases.
Earlier today, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan, while addressing the Dáil’s Covid-19 committee, warned that there was ‘no certainty’ that the spread of the virus can be kept suppressed.
The Secretary General of the Department of Health, Jim Breslin, added: “The acute phase of this crisis will definitely be measured in months and most probably in years, rather than days.
He stated bluntly: “The threat from the virus will be a reality for the foreseeable future.”
