THE Minister for Education, Joe McHugh, says that he expects schools to be in a position to reopen in September.
Mr McHugh told RTÉ’s The Week In Politics that work is underway to see how schools can reopen in a safe manner.
“We are going to work towards opening the schools because the NPHET advice is that schools will reopen in September,” he said.
“So the question now is, how can we do that in a safe way?
“I think it is too early to say how that will look. But that is a job we have started and we will continue to work our way through it.
“The last thing I want to do is say in the month of May what this will look like. That’s why I want at the heart of this to have a proper consultation.”
It was announced on Friday that the 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations will not be going ahead due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Students will now have the option of receiving grades calculated by their teachers or sitting a written exam in late 2020 or early 2021.
