Special Congress grants emergency powers to GAA management committee

THE GAA’s management committee has been given emergency powers during the Covid-19 emergency.

A special congress, held remotely via video conference this afternoon, has voted to transfer powers from Congress to the 16-person management committee.

The committee now have the authority to alter competition structures as they see fit during the next 12 weeks. That period could be extended by further eight-week periods once approved by central council.

The motions before today’s congress were unopposed.

“The motions at the GAA’s Special Congress for a temporary governance structure in emergency situations, was passed unopposed,” a brief statement from the GAA said.

Donegal was represented by Central Council delegate Sean Dunnion.

Earlier this week, the 2020 senior football and hurling championships were postponed. Authorities say they do not expect action to resume until July ‘at the earliest’.

The GPA, meanwhile, will insist on a four-week return-to-play period while the players’ body has told members to prepare for a no-Championship eventuality.
