A well-known Moville man is handing out thousands of Covid-19 labels to remind people here of their responsibilities around social distancing.
Liam Skelly says the labels, which ask others to respectfully ‘Keep Your Distance’ during the coronavirus emergency, are already proving extremely popular, with demand high right across Inishowen
“I can barely keep up with the number of people who are looking for them already. They’re going down a storm,” Liam explained.
The company he works for, Modern Labelling Systems, has produced 2.5 million covid-19 stickers, which will be distributed free of charge nationwide – and so far Liam has handed out thousands locally.
“Every customer gets 4,000 free labels but I have also distributed thousands more to people all over Inishowen, from nurses in Buncrana to businesses in Moville – you name it.”
“I have also left them in the shops and the Post Office in Moville as well as the ‘Wee Library’ for walkers along the shorefront.”
Liam, who has registered to volunteer with the HSE, says it’s extremely important that we continue to practice strict social distancing, adhere to all the guidelines and not to underestimate the virus, which has already claimed tens of thousands of lives.
“The stickers are an important reminder to people, who may be in a shop or somewhere and temporarily forget themselves.”
“But as soon as they see the yellow covid-19 sticker, that will spark something in them and remind them to stay back – because this is an emergency and we all must play our part.”
He says the warning labels will also help remind customers not to get too close to staff in shops at present.
“People working in our shops are frontline workers and they must be protected as best we can,” Liam adds.
The Moville man, whose also a GAA coach, feels the message is getting through as the days go on but he says it’s vital that we don’t let our collective guard down, otherwise we could find ourselves with a mounting death toll similar to what’s happening in Italy.
Liam has also noticed a significant improvement along the quite narrow Moville shorefront, where he’s a regular walker.
“I think locals are definitely realising that we must stay apart from each other. The weekend before last was bad – it was far too busy with people – but since then everyone is standing well back. They are even going down onto the beach to avoid each other, which is great.”
“We must not underestimate this virus – otherwise many people will die and it’ll be too late then,” he warned.
