Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has called on the public to report people who flout strict lockdown measures.
The top cop said people should only leave their house if they had an essential reason to do so amid draconian rules implemented by the government to limit the spread of Covid-19.
In Donegal today there is a visible Garda presence in many places.
Although Gardai are not operating checkpoints, many are visible on foot and mobile patrols.
Commissioner Harris admitted the regulations needed to enforce the lockdown restrictions would be active “very shortly”.
He said: “The regulations will come along very shortly. We know we’ll have them within days.
“In the meantime there is still a lot we can do, informing people, encouraging their compliance and really making people aware of what our function is of enforcing these regulations.
“The difficulty is there will be people in our society who make poor choices.
“People should contact us if they see a blatant disregard as to what the regulations are they are so we can deal with that.”
Mr Harris said the gardai had a “whole array of powers available to them” at present and this will be strengthened when the new regulations become active.
He added “The sanctions will be set out in the legislation and they will follow through in terms of our enforcement and reporting people then for prosecution.”
