Almost all welfare claims will be in bank accounts by Tuesday

Almost all unemployment benefit claims from people across Donegal will be processed today and the money will be in bank accounts by Tuesday.

The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection has said that most of the forms received from March 19 to yesterday will be processed for payment today.

The Department says the level of demand for the Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment payments in the last 10 days equates to 10 months normal claim-load.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to claim for the Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment payment after they lost their jobs because of Ireland’s coronavirus outbreak.

The payment was rolled out to allow people who have lost their jobs to be given a digout, until the Department can establish the type of benefit they should be on.

The first payments were issued last Friday and were in the bank accounts by Tuesday.

Yesterday, the Department said that they would prosecute people who falsely claimed the emergency payment meant for people who had been put out of work by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last week payments for those made unemployed by the Covid-19 crisis rose from €203 to €350 after Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty admitted: “It’s very difficult to pay rent on €203 per week.”
