General election candidates in Donegal are being asked to respect the ‘poster-free’ policies set by a number of towns and villages in Donegal.
Nine areas of Donegal have pledged to be poster-free during the current campaign for environmental, appearance and road safety reasons.
Falcarragh, Annagry, Bundoran, Donegal Town, Dungloe, Glenties, Kilcar, Lettermacaward, Malin Village have all been added to the 2020 Poster-Free list.
So far none of the 12 candidates in Donegal have signed up to the project.
As campaigning gets underway, election teams are being asked to refrain from erecting signs and posters in the listed areas.
Richard Quigley, secretary of the Glenties Community Development Group said: “Election time is upon us again and once again the town of Glenties is asking all parties and candidates not to erect election material within the town.
“Chairman of Glenties Community Development Group Brian Carr initiated this poster free request at the Local and European elections in 2014, when he was a candidate himself, and the committee have maintained it for every election and referendum since purely with the aim of maintaining the tidiness and general good appearance of the town.
“As a committee we have been very grateful for the understanding by candidates to this request over the past 6 years and the cooperation they have afforded us and we look forward to the same level of understanding and cooperation in this campaign.”
A spokesperson for Lettermacaward Development issued another reminder: “Election campaigning is underway and we continue to respectfully ask candidates to refrain from putting posters up in Lettermacaward. Thank you in advance. If candidates would like more information please email ldg@cullion.net.”
