As the CAO deadline approaches, it’s important to take all factors into consideration when making that all important CAO choice. Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) attracts students from across the country, and with more and more Donegal students choosing to stay at home, it’s important to highlight why so many students are choosing LYIT.
Here, Donegal captain and LYIT GAA Manager Michael Murphy talks about the exciting student life, course options and sporting opportunities that LYIT has to offer:
LYIT offers 54 CAO programmes, ranging from Level 6 to Level 8 on the CAO website. LYIT programmes are listed as ‘LY’ on the CAO. The programmes cover a wide range of discipline areas, with more than 60% of these programmes offering a structured work placement. LYIT is constantly linking students with employers.
The facilities at both of the LYIT campuses are exceptional. The combination of practical and theoretical learning provides an exciting and engaging learning space for students. Students that enjoy learning through doing will excel at LYIT.
The cost benefits of staying at home are one of many reasons why Donegal students choose LYIT. More and more students recognise that you gain by staying at home. By choosing LYIT, the stress of overpriced and scant availability of accommodation can be alleviated.
Many LYIT students have part-time jobs, have learnt to drive whilst studying at home, and have enjoyed the J1 summer programmes because they have chosen to stay at home. The same is true for students travelling from outside Donegal to the LYIT campuses, both Letterkenny and Killybegs offer affordable student accommodation. Student accommodation ranges in price from €180 to €320 per month in the Letterkenny and Killybegs regions. In Dublin, the cheapest campus accommodation for a single room is €746 per month (Source: www.creditunion.ie/news/blog/student-accommodation-rental-prices-by-county/#Campus%20Accomodation).
Campus life is vibrant and fun, most recently the LYIT Men’s GAA Team won their first game in the Higher Education Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup. If students are looking for a campus with an exceptional sporting offering then look no further than LYIT. If you are not sporty, and interested in public speaking, debating, dance, volunteering or academic based societies, then there is a wide variety of clubs and societies to choose from.
Students can also choose an Erasmus or International option in their programme, for example, students choosing to study Applied Computing at LYIT can go to Neusoft University in China in the first semester of third year as part of their course of study. In fact, LYIT has 50 International Partners across the world, which has become of particular interest to students choosing LYIT.
The deadline for normal CAO applications is 5.15pm 1st February, 2020 and the cost to apply is €45. If you are looking for more information on LYIT and LYIT programmes then visit www.lyit.ie or contact admissions@lyit.ie
