The organiser of a fundraising campaign to get funds for a Ballybofey woman battling bowel cancer says the reaction by people has been “overwhelming.”
Orla McMenamin set up a Go Fund Me page for her sister Angie Doherty after just two days ago.
She set a goal of €9,250 to help Angie and husband Liam to pay for the treatment and other costs.
And she is well on her way to reaching that goal thanks to the generosity of people across Donegal and further afield.
Orla wrote “This is just a big shout out and a big thank you to everyone who has donated and sent best wishes to Angie and her family from near and far. The response really has been overwhelming and it means a lot. We send our sincerest gratitude to you all. Xx.”
Angie has been fighting stage 4 bowel cancer since July 2017. Many treatments have been provided but unfortunately, the cancer has spread and is having a major impact on Angie’s quality of life.
Following a Laparoscopy carried out on Monday in the Mater Hospital it was identified that many tumours have grown in Angie’s lower abdomen and some have attached to the vital organs. Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy are not an option at the moment as Angie is very weak.
Currently, Angie’s husband Liam is providing vital support to his wife during this uncertain time. Due to this Liam is unable to work and support his family.
Since 2017 family members were supporting Angie and Liam financially when required, but unfortunately this resource is no longer an option. Angie hopes to undergo surgery to improve her quality of life in the coming days.
At present, due to the position of the tumour she is unable to eat and gain the necessary strength to avail of any other treatment options. Angie will need assistance and support prior to and following surgery which will be provided by her husband Liam.
“Angie wishes to have testing with Oncologica who are based in the UK, they would take a sample to increase her changes in finding out her best options for treatment which aims to prolong her life. This costs €2,000.
A spokesperson for the fundraising campaign added “Any donations to assist Angie, Liam and their family would be greatly appreciated. Angie, Liam and family are extremely grateful for every single person who has offered support and best wishes to date.”
