HISTORY WAS made in the midlands today as Letterkenny Institute of Technology won on their Sigerson Cup debut.
Athlone IT 3-4 Letterkenny Institute of Technology 1-18
Peadar Mogan hit 1-6 as the Michael Murphy-managed LyIT scored a superb eight-point away win over Athlone IT.
Mogan’s goal came around the midway point of the second half as the Port Road students dominated.
It was a fine display by LyIT, who were led by the likes of Mogan, Michael Langan – who had a soaring performance and weighed in with five points – and Christian Bonner.
Domhnall McMahon and Gio Russo netted goals in each half to keep a balance on the board, while Cathal Mannion added a third goal for Athlone IT late in the game.
By then, though, LyIT were already turning their heads towards next weekend – and a derby clash with IT Sligo.
