Robert O’Connor has done trojan work in recent years as the chairman of Donegal’s Relay for Life event. Here he sets out his hopes for 2020 both on a personal and professional level.
“I am married to Hazel with 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren. They live in Letterkenny, Ennis and Singapore. From a purely personal perspective, it would be lovely if they all lived locally but unfortunately work dictates otherwise. I hope 2020 affords us all good health and prosperity.
“On a professional front as Chairperson of Relay for Life Donegal, I hope we continue to increase our exposure from an Education and Awareness perspective at least as much as the financial aspect of our fundraising efforts. Our local Schools Project aimed mainly at TY students is high on our agenda and we are going to work at attracting more school involvement.
“With cancer on the increase we believe it is important to educate our children at an early age and help them to understand that lifestyle choices can help in their overall health and wellbeing. This can be achieved through our 1for1@1 school challenge.
“Developing on our Education and Awareness vision, this year we have once again organised a Cancer Conference on Saturday 8th February in Mount Errigal Hotel. This is completely FREE to attend including lunch. We hope it offers Cancer Survivors and their families an opportunity to meet and share their concerns in a friendly, informative and relaxing environment.
“Amongst the topics under discussion will be the fantastic services offered locally by The Irish Cancer Society. The highlight of the Conference will be showing once again our commitment to Local Researchers at Letterkenny University Hospital with an update on existing project and some ‘Fantastic News’ regarding additional funding of a NEW Research Project. News on this will be released at our Conference and will I believe be innovative in Ireland let alone Donegal.
“Relay for Life Donegal Committee are very excited about this additional opportunity to show their commitment along with Irish Cancer Society to the people of our county.
Finally I hope our Relay weekend on 23/24May in LYIT continues to receive support from all over Donegal. At Relay, Cancer Survivors are our VIP guests and we look forward to seeing as many as possible attend.
“With over 1000 people in Donegal being diagnosed with cancer annually we want everyone to experience the hope and support that Relay offers. Relay could not happen without the amazing Teams who register year in and year out, we have become a true Relay family and we will be looking for Teams new and old to join us on Relay weekend and help us make Relay For Life Donegal bigger and better than ever before with more people making new memories and lasting friendships.”
