Donegal County Council has kickstarted plans to build a new swimming pool in Buncrana.
Tenders have been published this week for the design and construction of a long-awaited leisure centre for the town. The last swimming pool closed temporarily in 2015 but never reopened, leaving a generation of children without the public facilities to learn to swim.
New plans have revealed that the existing leisure centre will be demolished to make way for a new ‘state of the art’ building to serve Buncrana and the surrounding region.
The tender is separated into two lots – one for an integrated design team and another for a Project Manager/ Quantity Surveyor Team. Applications must be made by 10th January 2020.
The progress on the project has been welcomed in Buncrana. Cllr Jack Murray commented that he is delighted that Donegal County Council has ‘finally’ advertised for tenders.
He said: “This has been a frustratingly slow process but this development is a significant step towards securing the top class public swimming pool that the people of Inishowen deserve.”
