More 7,000 farmers in the Donegal are set to benefit from €38.3m of financial support, it has bee revealed today (Weds).
Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh has welcomed the grant to support 7,716 Donegal farmers on Wednesday.
“A €38.3m fund to support farmers in Donegal is of huge benefit to rural communities and to help sustain families on farms up and down the county,” Minister McHugh said.
“In total, thanks to this Government support, some 7,716 farmers across Donegal will see the benefit of this fund. And this has an important spin off for the villages and towns where the farmers live and shop and do their business.
“Farmers are key to sustaining a local community and it is right that we do our utmost to support them and the next generation who are thinking about a life and career on the land.”
The €38.3m fund was confirmed in the Basic Farm Payment allocation for Donegal by the Department of Agriculture and Food.
Minister McHugh added: “These cash payments are a key priority for Fine Gael to ensure the greatest number of farmers can be helped at the earliest possible opportunity.
“Part of this year’s payments include a higher advance payment of 70% for 2019 rather than 50% as provided for in the EU legislation. I would like to thank Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed for helping to secure this with the EU Commission.
“We also need to make sure the payments are made as quickly and efficiently as possible. They are hugely important for our farmers.”
