IT WAS a case of two out of three ain’t bad for Donegal boxers as the National Senior Championships got underway yesterday.
Mark McCole and Oran Shields advanced to next weekend’s quarter-finals, but there was no joy for Michael McConigley.
Dungloe man McCole, who is competing for Illies Golden Gloves in these Championships, booked a spot in the last eight of the welterweight section.
McCole took a unanimous decision win over Christian Preston from Docklands and will now meet Conor Reneghan from Keady in next Friday’s quarter-finals.
Shields, the Illies Golden Gloves middleweight (pictured above), had to bite down on his gum shield for a hrs-hard win over Fr Flanagans’ Adam Farrell. Letterkenny native Shields had his hand raised after a 3-2 split decision went in his favour.
Shields is eying up a bout with Rokas Balrukoni from Clane in his quarter-final.
McConigley was on the wrong end of a 4-1 split decision to Marcin Skalski from Athlone.
Caroline Gallagher, the Illies GG welter, is already through to the November 1 semis. Gallagher has a semi-final against Celtic Eagles’ Karolina Jaglowska.
