MERVYN O’Donnell felt that Gaoth Dobhair have been ‘disrespected’ in recent weeks as he launched a sideswipe at the champions’ critics.
The win keeps their defence of their Donegal and Ulster crowns on track.
“I felt in the media that Kilcar had won the Ulster Championship,” O’Donnell told Ocean FM’s Paddy McGill after the game.
“We did feel disrespected. It was all the better and it worked in our favour that we came under the radar. You’d expect as Ulster champions to have more respect, but we answered all the calls.”
Gaoth Dobhair hadn’t hit the high notes in the Championship until today and they face Naomh Conaill in two weeks’ time in a repeat of the 2018 decider.
O’Donnell said: “We got the timing right. We huffed and puffed through the first stages of the Championship. We took a risk in peaking for these days.
“The more experienced boys were planning for a little further down the line. You kind of have to look at that and not abuse the body.”
